Rocko's Modern Life Wiki

Stephen McDannell Hillenburg (born August 21, 1961-died November 26, 2018) was an American marine science teacher and artist best known for creating the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants. He owned the production company, United Plankton Pictures. He wrote and directed certain episodes of Rocko's Modern Life. In season 4, he got promoted to creative director/producer. Hillenburg would pitch SpongeBob to Nickelodeon following the end of Rocko's Modern Life, and recruit many crew from the latter series, including Heffer-turned-SpongeBob voice actor Tom Kenny - Joe Murray was not involved with SpongeBob, though he stated before the series was greenlit that should it be greenlit, it would be "a blessing to us all".[1]

Hillenburg sadly passed away in November 2018 from heart failure due to the ALS disease.
